How a-Gnostics Improved Electricity Consumption Forecasts with a Faster and More Cost-Effective Weather Service and Tower.dev

Accurate electricity consumption forecasting for a specific zone or sub-zone requires up-to-date and reliable weather forecasts.

Pro-gnostics, a SaaS solution of a-Gnostics, provides electricity consumption forecasts for Europe and North America with a focus on key energy markets: IESO (Independent Electricity System Operator), MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator), and PJM (PJM Interconnection) – Regional Transmission Organization (RTO)s. To cover such a large and diverse region, we rely on weather data from around 40 different locations.

To ensure uninterrupted forecasting services for our customers, we integrate data from multiple weather forecast providers. This redundancy guarantees consistent performance even if one of the providers is temporarily unavailable. On average, we process and analyze about 1 GB of weather data daily.

Before the Migration to Tower.dev

Previously, the Pro-gnostics Weather Service was hosted on Microsoft Azure, using Docker for containerized deployment:
– Monthly cost was high because of substantial cloud infrastructure spend;
– Execution times were long, because each computation run resulted in a high load;
– Runs were scheduled every 3 hours, but we wanted a higher run frequency.

While this setup was reliable, we identified potential for both performance improvements and cost reduction.

Migrating to Tower.dev

The migration to Tower.dev took just a couple of days, including testing and deployment to production, because existing Python scripts could run as they were.

The results were clear:
– 50% cost savings;
– 70% faster execution time.

This improvement directly enhanced our forecasting pipeline by allowing the system to pull in fresher weather data closer to the execution time of the electricity consumption forecast.

Business Value

With faster data processing and more recent weather inputs, our models now operate with higher accuracy, which is essential in markets where forecasting precision directly impacts financial outcomes.

For example, in IESO, the accuracy of electricity consumption forecasts affects how much energy trading companies pay or save. Inaccurate forecasts can lead to imbalances between actual and scheduled consumption, resulting in costly penalties or inefficient trades.

By improving our weather service infrastructure, our customers benefit in two major ways:
– Better forecast accuracy: The closer the weather data is to the time of prediction, the more accurate Pro-gnostics’ models become;
– Financial impact: A more precise forecast leads to better energy trading decisions, reduced balancing costs, and overall operational efficiency.

Artificial Intelligence and electricity consumption during the war in Ukraine

On February 24 2022, after the attack on Ukraine by the Russian Federation, the war began for everyone, each defending the country by working, doing what he and she can and helping the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Work on the economic front helps to protect Ukraine too.

Providing the country with electricity is necessary for the army, business and every citizen. Those who, unfortunately, have experienced light outages, understand even more how important it is not only for work, but for maintaining morale and life. We thank all power engineers from the generation and distribution of electricity for their excellent work, for our part we help the following:

One of the solutions in a-Gnostics, which also continues to work during the war, is to forecast electricity consumption in Ukraine. It is necessary to make an hourly forecast for market for the day ahead. The solution for forecasting energy consumption we started to develop before the launch of a new electricity market in Ukraine on July 1, 2019, and successfully implemented it for several enterprises. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are used for more accurate forecasting.

24 лютого 2022, після нападу на Україну Російською Федерацією, війна почалася для всіх, кожен і кожна боронить країну тим, що працює, робить те, що вміє найкраще і матеріально допомагає Збройним Силам України. Роботи на економічному фронті також допомагають захищати Україну.

Забезпечення країни електроенергією необхідне для армії, бізнесу та кожного громадянина. Ті, хто, на жаль, стикнувся із відключеннями світла, ще більше розуміє наскільки це є важливим товаром не тільки для роботи, а підтримки морального стану та життєдіяльності. Дякуємо всім енергетикам від генерації та розподілу електричної енергії за чудову роботу, зі свого боку ми допомагаємо наступним:

Одне із рішень в a-Gnostics, яке також продовжує працювати під час війни — прогнозування споживання електроенергії в Україні. Потрібно робити погодинний прогноз для РДН (ринок на добу наперед). В загальному вигляді, задачу прогнозування споживання енергоресурсів ми почали вирішувати, що до запуску нового ринку електроенергії 1 липня 2019 року, і успішно впровадили для декількох промислових корпорацій. Використовуються методи машинного навчання та штучного інтелекту для більш точного прогнозування.
